Perchloroethylene Application
Perchloroethylene/ PCE is an excellent solvent for organic materials. Otherwise it is volatile, highly stable, and nonflammable. For these reasons,
it is widely used in dry cleaning. It is also used to degrease metal parts in the automotive and other metalworking industries,usually as a mixture with other chlorocarbons. Tetrachloroethylene is being substituted in Europe for similar but more hazardous trichloroethylene. It appears in a few consumer products including paint strippers and spot removers. It is also used in aerosol preparations.
It is used in neutrino detectors where a neutrino interacts with a neutron in the chlorine atom and converts it to a proton to form argon.

Historical applications

PCE was once extensively used as an intermediate in the manufacture of HFC-134a and related refrigerants. PCE is an excellent solvent for organic materials. Otherwise it is volatile, highly stable, and nonflammable. For these reasons, it is widely used in dry cleaning. It is also used to degrease metal parts in the automotive and other metalworking industries, usually as a mixture with other chlorocarbons.


1. Tetrachloroethylene is widely used, mainly used as metal degreasing solvent, also used as intestinal worm repellent tetrachloroethylene can be used as fat extraction agent fire extinguishing agent and smoke agent, can also be used for the synthesis of trichloroethylene and fluorinated organic compounds, etc;
2. Widely used as natural and synthetic fiber dry cleaning agent as well as metal degreasing detergent and general solvent organic synthesis intermediates;
3. Used as standard substance for chromatographic analysis;
4. Repellent and fat extractant for adhesives, also used in organic synthesis.

* Processing method

Ethylene Method
Trichloroethylene and tetrachloroethylene can be co-produced by the following two methods.

a. Direct ethylene chloride and chlorine in a solution containing FeCl3 catalyst, reaction at 280-450℃ to generate 1, 2- dichloro ethane, and then further chlorinated into trichloroethylene and tetrachloroethylene, after distillation,
respectively with NH3 neutralization, washing, drying, to obtain the finished product.

b. 1, 2- dichloro ethane is produced by the addition of ethylene and chlorine in oxychlorination process. The oxychlorination reaction of 1, 2- dichloro ethane with chlorine and oxygen is carried out at 425℃ and 138-207 kpa with CuCl2 and KCl as catalyst. The product is distilled after cooling, washing and drying to obtain high purity products.

Hydrocarbon-oxidizing Method
The hydrocarbon mixture containing methane, ethane, propane, propylene, etc., is chlorinated and pyrolyzed at 50-500℃ to obtain the mixture of chlorinated hydrocarbons, which is separated into various products after rectification.

Acetylene method

Acetylene and chlorine are heated and chlorinated to form 1, 1, 2, 2-tetrachloroethane, which is then chlorinated to form
pentachloroethane, which is then chlorinated to form tetrachloroethane. Because acetylene price is high, has been gradually
replaced by ethylene method.
